Why this exists

DOC’s hut and campsite pages are excellent once you know the name. They are slower when you only know you’ve got a weekend and a tank of petrol.

Weka Weekend puts the public hut and campsite points on one map, then lets you ask the useful questions: from my town, under four hours’ drive, heating if it’s winter, dogs if the weka will share, bookable if you want a locked door.

It is a personal project by Steve. The idea — weekend-shaped DOC stays, from public data — is one other Kiwis have also chased. This version is original: map-first, huts and campsites, weather on the place you pick, a shortlist in your browser, and shareable filters.

Data

Places come from public DOC spatial layers (Crown Copyright: Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai, CC BY 4.0). Drive times are a winding-road estimate from a straight line, not Google traffic. Walk-in hours still live on the official DOC page — we send you there instead of inventing a track graph.

What’s better than a card grid
